From January 11 to the 18, the Jazz Mandolin Project assembled at a studio/ barn in rural Vermont to record. There was about two feet of snow on the ground and it kept snowing the entire time we were there. Few of us even left the location. Through the days we worked hard on our planned material and well into the night. We would break for a wonderful sit down dinner prepared on sight. Afterwards, the official “after dinner jams” would commence. These were just for fun, giving us a sense of release after focusing carefully all day long. Different musicians would jump into the fray at different points where they felt like it. Sometimes, someone would try an instrument they weren’t that familiar with. Everyone played with the looseness and abandonment of a late night jam session, not a recording session- but the tape was rolling.
Months later, in listening to the material we had gone to the studio to record, we began talking about these jams. We were curious to listen to them and found that these were a lot of special moments- too many to remain unheard. So, here they are, I hope you enjoy these improvisations.
